Diagnosed with type 1 (see description below) diabetes in 2002, Sébastien Sasseville became the first Canadian with diabetes to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 25th 2008. He is also one of only three people in the world )ith that chronic disease to have climbed the highest peak on the planet.

In the spirit of sharing the dream, he also led groups of teens to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and to Mount Everest Base camp.

Type 1 diabetes is a non-preventable autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. It is the most severe form of diabetes, attacking children and adults, leaving them insulin dependent for life. Unlike type 2 diabetes, it cannot be prevented by diet, exercise or medication and living with the disease demands constant blood testing and regulating. A person living with type 1 diabetes requires approximately 1,463 needles a year and 2,190 finger pokes a year to test their blood sugar – it imposes a very structured lifestyle on a family to adequately monitor the disease, and, avoid devastating complications.
